Chapter Five

For five nights, Lennox barely slept. He couldn’t eat, didn’t want to converse with anyone. In an unspoken agreement, Màiri had taken Lachlan, and was caring for him alongside her own twin babies. The boy couldn’t have been in safer hands, and one day Lennox would thank her properly, but for now all he could think about was his beautiful Aoiffe, taken from him before her time.

When he had held her in his arms, in those last few moments before she’d died, he’d tried to tell her everything she meant to him. It had been as if he’d known this was all the time they had left, despite the efforts of that woman, Sarah, to get Aoiffe to the hospital. He’d cradled his mate, thanking her for Lachlan, for the gorgeous little miracle they’d created between them, and letting her know he loved her with all his heart.

‘And I love you, m’eudail.’ Had those been her last words, whispered almost too softly for him to hear, or had he simply mistaken her tortured attempts to breathe for speech? It didn’t matter: he knew those words had been in her heart, if not on her lips. She loved him; she had always loved him.

The others in the pack had offered him their deep condolences, promised they would do whatever they could for him – as alpha, he would have deserved no less, but he knew their grief was genuine. They had loved Aoiffe too, in their own way, and her laughing presence would be missed around the settlement.

At last, hunger and the need to bathe drove him from his bed. As he sat at Màiri’s kitchen table, eating the porridge she had prepared for him, his thoughts turned to how he would cope without his mate. Màiri had told him she was happy to act as Lachlan’s wet nurse until the boy was old enough to be weaned, which solved his most immediate problem, but she could never truly replace Aoiffe. Nor could any of the other females in the pack.

Having all but licked the bowl clean, he thanked Màiri for her hospitality, scooped Lachlan into his arms, and took his son outside for some fresh air. A walk in the woods might help to clear his head, Lennox thought, even if it would do nothing for his longer term problems.

Wandering out past the pack’s little collection of homes, he caught sight of muddy tracks that could only have been churned up by the wheels of Sarah’s vehicle. As a child, he’d been told repeatedly that humans hated his kind and were not to be trusted; his parents had brought him up to view them with fear and suspicion. Yet Sarah had shown him nothing but kindness, even when he had insisted he didn’t need her help. He should have thanked her properly for all she had done, but he hadn’t wanted her walking into the settlement. He doubted the rest of the pack would have seen her as anything but a threat.
